ART 4985: Historical Print Production
This course is a survey of the impact of printing and printing technology development on artmaking in Europe, specifically as it relates to the graphic arts. The course incorporates actual practice in typesetting metal and wood type, letterpress printing and assembly and study of bookbinding techniques in a historical context. The class will discuss current printing practices as they relate to graphic design, visit a commercial offset printing plant, a specialty printer and participate in the creation of a collaborative broadside project while in the States. In France, students will visit historical examples of early Parisian poster art which still influence public communication today and study and observe early lithographic techniques used by poster artists such as Toulouse Lautrec. The emphasis of this course is to establish historical contexts and technical knowledge of a number of different printing techniques that influence current design practices and print production technology.

Drive By Press was created to educate and share the contemporary practice of printmaking with students and art audiences across America.
DBP has visited well over 150 universities, colleges, and public schools, traveling over 200,000 miles! During each stop DBP collects prints from area artists, amassing the largest collection of contemporary prints from across the country!
DBP is a self-funded endeavor solely surviving on small visiting artists honorariums from schools and from the sales of printing wood blocks on paper and t-shirts. Many blocks have been graciously donated from some of the greatest wood cut artists in the country to support and perpetuate the the endeavor of Drive By press!
DBP loves the opportunity to share prints, techniques, artists, and stories about the journey with students. Also, individual critiques and information about graduate programs for students who are interested in a M.F.A.

Spring semester class in Film /Video
From Niklas Vollmer: I am offering Community-Based Media Production (Film 4125/Comm 6125) again this coming Spring semester, which will make for a rich and unique collaboration involving cross-cultural exchange via Skype and digital web and video production. The class meets on Tuesdays from 11am to 12:40pm and Thursdays form 11am to 2:30pm.
Class participants will begin by producing a local Metro Atlanta-based digital video or web-based project -- and then be collaborating with film and art students from two major universities in the country of Colombia. The course curriculum builds in an end-of-the semester public screening to a sizable and enthusiastic Metro Atlanta audience. The international component also likely ensures screenings in South America!
Technology-wise, we will be using JVC HD cameras and have access to a lab housing Macs with Final Cut Pro and other web and graphic design software.
As Community-Based Media is an advanced video production class that focuses on collaborative cross-cultural exchange and storytelling via digital media (the web, mobile media and video, for example), the class is best served by being populated with students who have production skills and/or community outreach backgrounds.
If interested, please briefly discuss:
- your digital video, audio or web design/production skill set and any other related creative abilities
- related courses that you have taken at GSU or elsewhere
- any community outreach, advocacy and volunteering or cross-cultural background and experiences
- anything else that makes you qualified for the class
Please also note your:
- major and minor
- standing (sophomore, junior, senior, grad student, etc.)
- overall GSU GPA
- your Panther ID # (for course authorization purposes)
Please send me your Panther ID # and responses by 10am on Monday, November 23rd if your are interested in registering for the class.

DEADLINE EXTENDED to Nov 9 for Holiday Greeting Card Design Contest
The College of Arts and Sciences at Georgia State University invites A&S students, faculty and staff to submit designs for its third-annual holiday greeting card contest. The winning card design will be printed and sent out by Dean Lauren Adamson to friends of the college. The contest is open to all students, faculty and staff of the College of Arts and Sciences. The winning artist, selected by the Dean’s Office, will receive $250.
DESIGN GUIDELINES: All designs should be the original work of the submitter and should broadly reflect the holiday spirit. Ideally, the card will also reference the College of Arts and Sciences and Georgia State University in some way. (However, we would prefer that designs not be focused on the GSU mascot, Pounce.) To learn more about the college and its programs, please visit www.cas.gsu.edu.
All designs are for the front of a 5.7” x 8.5” greeting card (or 8.5” x 5.7” if landscape). Designs do not have to feature the Georgia State colors, but if you wish to incorporate them, please see the guidelines on university colors and identity specifications at www2.gsu.edu/~wwwidg/about.htm. Bleeds are acceptable.
Digital drafts of entries should be emailed as pdf or jpg files to dasoff@langate.gsu.edu. Please keep each file attachment under 1 MB. We will request a higher resolution version of the design if needed. Please include “2009 Holiday Card Design Contest” in the email subject line. For more information, contact the Dean’s Office at dasoff@langate.gsu.edu or 404-413-5107.
To download a flyer with examples of past college holiday cards, go to http://www.cas.gsu.edu/docs/misc/09HolidayCard.pdf.
Thank you.
